Unfortunately 'Statement Piece: Carry Your Story' with the Sur-Collective has been postponed until 2025.
Please take a look at one of our other Summer School offerings for this year!
Storytelling is a strong component of every culture, with art and adornment central to sharing our human experience.
Guided by various artists from the Sur-Collective, in this immersive five-day Summer School workshop, we'll embark on a journey through discussions on symbolism, mark-making, working with clay and textiles, and learning new methodologies of sculpting and weaving.
Examining icons that hold personal significance and using drawing as a key part of our process, we'll start by carving a Lino stamp to test print motifs that carry our unique voice and imagery. We'll then dive into the cultural context of Latin American ceramic, jewellery and textile visual heritage - fostering an appreciation for the rich diversity of artistic expression and creating a platform for discussions about cultural appropriation.
Participants will learn the process of creating hollow spheres with clay, under glazing, carving, coiling and pinching techniques. We'll also introduce natural fibres and sustainable weaving practices into our design process through knitting, knotting and sewing.
Whether you choose to create wearable art or a detailed ceramic work for display, attendees will design a ceramic necklace, chest adornment, or wall piece layered with our own personal narratives. This Statement Piece will embody the concept of cultural hybridisation; the meeting point where our traditions converge with our lives in the contemporary world.
