 Pekapeka-tou-roa Zoetrope

In Henderson Park there lives a colony of Pekapeka-tou-roa—tiny bats flitting through the night, feeding on insects and roosting in the giant ancient trees.

In this workshop, students will explore the habitat and behavior of our native long-tailed bats before creating their own zoetrope. Through this hands-on process, they will discover the whakapapa of moving images and film, bringing their illustrated pekapeka to life in flight. Each student will craft their own zoetrope and have the opportunity to develop multiple film strips to spin and observe.
