What is it about human nature that makes us covet things, to collect them, to own them, to adorn and decorate. These symbols of privilege and status, once epitomised during the Gilded Age, now find new expressions in our contemporary culture. How were these concepts defined in the past and how do they resonate today?

They Saw Leaves Growing

As curator of They Saw Leaves Growing, Wesley John Fourie juxtaposes the work of two printmakers, senior practitioner Sue Cooke, and emerging artist Brie Rate. Despite an almost 40-year gap in age and experience the concerns of these two artists have a common theme in the resilience of nature.

If you were to share the story of how your family came to live in Aotearoa, what would that look like? Inspired by the work of current exhibiting artist Guy Howard-Smith, this workshop is focused on sharing your own unique family stories. Using mixed media techniques of illustration, you will be led in creating a tapestry like work on paper using colour and line to depict your whakapapa.

Plaster Scene Relief Making

Hosted by our resident glass artist Sofia Athineou, you will be taught how to make a relief scene made from plaster by pressing natural and found objects into clay. The next step is to pour plaster into your clay cavity where your scene them becomes 3 dimensional. This kids workshop is an introduction to developing your understanding about positive and negative spaces.
