At-Home Approaches to Contemporary Handmade Paper

This 1-day workshop with contemporary artist Brie Rate is an introduction to a variety of hand paper making techniques that can be completed at home, without the use of commercial machines. You will gain the skills you need turn organic and recycled material into pulp with a focus on sustainability and expanding the notion of what paper can be.

Learn how to design and form basic sheets, before moving onto creative methods such as embedding, pressing, stencilling, freehand application (pulp painting) and object assemblages.

Students will have made several sheets of paper which are works of art in themselves, which could then be used in combination with other processes (such as writing, drawing, painting, printmaking or collage) to explore and express ideas.
