 Tī Rākau

Tamariki will celebrate Matariki by crafting their own tī rākau for the traditional Māori game Tītī Tōrea.

They will learn about kōwhaiwhai patterns and design their own, which will be printed onto cotton fabric using foam board printing. They will prepare dried flax flower stems by sanding them smooth and glue their printed fabric onto the tī rākau, creating a unique and meaningful design. To complete their set, tamariki will make a harakeke-plaited toggle to keep their tī rākau together.

We will conclude by playing Tītī Tōrea, a game that builds rhythm and hand-eye coordination, accompanied by the song E Papa Waiari.
