 How Trees Talk

Children will get to experience what it means to make large-scale art as we discuss notions of cooperation, in relationship to how trees work together, looking after each other.

This workshop is inspired by all the wonderous ways that the giant trees of our ngahere cooperate. We will explore the complex systems of trees, how they eat and drink, exchange gases and communicate. Discovering what creatures live in and on them and what other plants and microorganisms they live in balance and cooperation with.

Choosing from the giant natives of our ngahere students will each create a large-scale A1 artwork. Working on the floor we will work through a variety of processes, each tied to another wonderous discovery around how trees are.

Techniques will include applying ink and dye, creating a leaf stamp as well as collage and painting with natural whenua paints and watercolour. All combining to create a wonderous large tree ecosystem with a little bit of magic thrown in.
