As curator of They Saw Leaves Growing, Wesley John Fourie juxtaposes the work of two printmakers, senior practitioner Sue Cooke, and emerging artist Brie Rate. Despite an almost 40-year gap in age and experience the concerns of these two artists have a common theme in the resilience of nature.
Cooke is concerned with landscape, sustainability and regenerating indigenous flora. Large scale banners allow the viewer to feel the essence and scale of regenerating forest, and smaller works explore the impact of deforestation on the landscape.
Rate’s work presents her way of connecting to the urban natural environment while living in Central Tāmaki Makaurau. Through drawing she is forced to look closely, noticing details which might otherwise be walked past without thought. Removed directly from her workbook, the drawings are unaltered and illustrate a direct process between artist and subject.
