The duo sent packages, emails and handwritten notes initially, before embarking on a visit North in the Raumati (summer) season that sparked their artistic collaboration through shared making.
Bringing together material fragments, handmade using the surface techniques of Hiapo and European cotton and linen rag, they worked together through a playful, intuitive process. Each would collage their individual responses in turns, guided by growth, customary knowledge, whenua and the sincere practice of sharing taonga. In Return presents their collaborative suite of mixed-media works.

Kites that fly our words high up in the sky. This workshop takes cues from the rich history of Protest art in Aotearoa, and asks young people what they would want to say and then gives them the tools to fly their words high for everyone to see.
