This exhibition explores the essence of Hellenic identity, weaving together histories, mythology, and the lived experiences of Sofia Athineou as a Greek woman. From the rugged mountains to the endless seas, from ancient democracy to modern voices, these glass works embody the enduring spirit of Hellas.
This new body of work reflects the vibrancy of Greek markets, the warmth of families, and the resilience of its people, while navigating Athineou’s connection to Greece and her sense of transformation and belonging in Aotearoa. Hellenic celebrates her heritage, looking between the past and present, Greece and Aotearoa, through memories and identity.
Sofia Athineou, a celebrated contemporary glass artist of Greek heritage, is renowned for her dynamic sculptures that beautifully capture the essence of the natural world. Inspired by the elemental forces of the Waitākere Ranges, Sofia creates vibrant glass works that range from intricate, small-scale pieces to large, commanding installations. Her sculptures draw upon the fluidity and movement of wind, fire, and water, reflecting the constant energy and natural patterns found in these elements.
Her art is prominently featured in major gallery and museum shops across New Zealand. While her pieces are cherished in private collections, Sofia is set to make her mark with her first major public commission for Auckland Transport at the Maungawhau/Mt Eden Station. This project, featuring striking red glass triangles that symbolize the 53 volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau, seamlessly blends cultural narratives with architectural design.
