 Ngā Tapuwae o Mataaho

The third in our popular series of pakiwaitara focusing on local histories and place. Pakiwaitara are traditional stories that serve to share knowledge, teach lessons, explain phenomena, and establish social or cultural practices.

Guided by the research and voice of Pita Turei, Ngā Tapuwae o Mataaho examines the stories behind the formation of Lake Pupuke and other geographical features. Revoicing the narratives that established Mataaho in her current role as guardian over the volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau and in this way enhancing connection to the land we all live in.

The workshop commences with a shadow play presentation, and pakiwaitara voiced by master storyteller Pita Turei, followed by a multilayered mixed-media workshop. Through the workshop students will respond with their own sculptural Marquette developed through a series of art processes, each interwoven into the story to help embed the memory and inspire imagination.
