 Life as Fungi

Honouring the fascinating life of native NZ fungi, this drawing workshop will follow the fungal life cycle in stages. From the mycelium filaments and complex underground networks to the bloom of mushrooms and the puff dispersion of spores.

Primarily a drawing workshop working with the versatile caran d'ache watercolour pastels, students will combine frottage with illustration to describe and celebrate in a variety of ways the intricate world of NZ native Fungi. Frottage to capture the forest floor and the webs of mycelium, illustration to describe the strange shapes and colours of the myriads of different mushroom blooms.
Clouds of spores will be added at the end in coloured ink, to pull the whole picture together. Each child will produce a work on black paper framed with white card ultimately capturing the mystery and magic of the fungi life cycle.
