 Kinetic Kowhaiwhai

In this engaging and hands-on workshop, students will discover the beauty and language of kowhaiwhai, a traditional Māori art form.

This workshop will introduce participants to the work of contemporary Māori artists, including renowned artist Cliff Whiting, and provide insights into the significance and symbolism of kowhaiwhai in Māori culture.

Students will learn about kinetic sculpture, then create a simple Automata mechanism and bring their kowhaiwhai designs to life. Through the process of designing, building, and animating their own kinetic sculptures using simple machine elements such as cams and axles, participants will develop their creativity, problem-solving skills, and understanding of the intersection between art and technology.
