The Vacant Spaces Pop-Up Gallery: Stamp the Streets Henderson Map

The Vacant Spaces Pop-Up Gallery is brought to you by Eke Panuku Development Auckland and Corban Estate Arts Centre, and is part of the Henderson town centre revitalisation project. It is a celebration of art and culture in conjunction with CEAC’s year-long initiative Play, Create, and Learn.

This inspiring project invites artists to reimagine vacant shop windows, turning them into vibrant temporary art installations that reflect the rich creative spirit of the community, transform everyday space, and make art accessible to everyone.

Rooted in CEAC’s commitment to fostering creativity in all its forms, this initiative goes beyond beautification—it’s about breathing new life into underutilized spaces while showcasing the incredible talent of local artists. By exploring themes such as Henderson’s history, natural environment, and cultural diversity, artists are weaving the stories of the town into imaginative displays that invite public engagement, curiosity, reflection and connection.

Pencil, watercolour and ink on paper

Since I arrived in Henderson it has been my home. My experience here has been one of community warmth and opportunity. People actually say hello, and while I was walking around completing sketches for this piece, I was greeted with interest and encouragement. Henderson is full of excellent locally run businesses and green spaces. A short walk will bring you to native bush or the sound of Opanuku stream or a view of the Waitākere Ranges. I was really pleased to complete this map and contribute to an event celebrating the township and residents of Henderson. I hope it continues to foster a sense of discovery and value for what is here.

About the artist:
Brie Rate is an Ōtautahi born artist for whom all work begins with observation. Her practice includes drawing, printmaking and paper-making; exploring mark-making using conventional mediums like pencil and ink, and through assemblages of found organic and recycled material. Brie is interested in contemporary ecologies, and the dynamic intersection of natural and urban biomes. Since graduating from Elam, Brie has been a resident artist at Corban Estate Arts Centre. She has been a finalist in the Parkin Drawing Prize for two years running and her most recent show, they saw leaves growing at Homestead Galleries showcased over 30 workbook drawings documenting green space in Tāmaki Makaurau.
