Waitakere Writers

Waitakere Writers meet on the second Saturday of each month at a venue at Corban Estate Arts Centre. The only exceptions to this in 2010 are, January when there is no meeting and May when the meeting will be held at the Henderson library. We meet to support, encourage and learn from each other and to participate in the craft of writing.

We are a diverse group of men and women, from different backgrounds, different cultures and age groups. Some of our members are, or have been, professional writers, some are just beginning the exciting journey of writing and others prefer writing as a hobby. Expertise is not a requirement only enthusiasm and interest in reading and writing.
This year we have had a varied programme, including exercises in critiquing, editing, proof-reading, writing from different points of view and an exercise for writer’s block. We have written short stories and/or poetry for our second Anthology, which was published recently and is available for sale. At our Christmas meeting several sketches written by members were performed. Some of our members have spoken to the group on subjects ranging from journalism and genealogy to book launches. Those who have had their work published during the month read their work or excerpts from it, to the group.

Some exercises are written during the meeting, others are done at home and writers are encouraged to read their work to the group for feedback An example of a writing task undertaken this year was “Change”, an historical exercise. This resulted in some excellent work which is to be filed at Henderson Library as reference material.
Members are asked to write of a teen-age experience for the February meeting. These exercises are to be presented as if for publishing and, may also be lodged through Waitakere Writers, at the library.

Guest speaker Megan Hutchings spoke about researching for historical writing, for fact and fiction.
Jocelyn Watkin lectured on self-publishing, marketing and sourcing finance.
Non- members were invited to attend these lectures also.
