The Magic Realism of Portraiture

Liam Barr

Mon 16 – Fri 20 January, 10am – 4.30pm | 5 days

Deepen your drawing and painting skills and explore how combining the real and the unreal can be used to build original visual imagery and narratives. Bring along a photo of someone special to you and learn how to manipulate your image into a narrative composition which has more meaning, life and reflects the subject’s true identity.

Haus of Flox: Understanding the Stencil

Hayley King aka FLOX

Mon 16 – Thu 19 January, 10am – 4.30pm | 4 days

In this workshop, Flox will take students step-by-step through the creative process of stencil making; from the initial pencil sketch to stencil cutting and then finally learning the techniques of aerosol painting. Students receive beautiful resource material based on native New Zealand flora and fauna, but they are encouraged to also bring their own designs and to work from self-sourced imagery. Final artworks will be completed on mounted plywood.

Aluminium Casting

David McCracken, Mark Schafer and Nate Savill

Mon 16 – Thu 19 January, 10am – 4.30pm | 4 days

This course introduces participants to the rudiments of aluminium casting beginning with making a small foundry, preparing moulds and finally casting and finishing objects in aluminium. The aim is for all participants to leave the course with their own micro foundry and all the information required to begin work at home. The focus will be on problem solving with low-tech, commonly available and affordable solutions and some lateral thinking in preparation to demystify the production of artworks.

Glass Kiln Casting

Fiona Rennie-Schwieters

Mon 16 – Fri 20 Jan, 10am – 4.30pm | 5 days

An introduction to the ancient technique of lost wax glass kiln casting using beautiful, locally made Gaffer Glass. Students will learn to work with wax making hand sized sculptures. These can be fitted together to make a larger work or remain as individual pieces. This 5 day workshop will focus on techniques that students can use to create unique and beautiful glass. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm! Glass will be fired after the workshop.

Encaustic Exploration

Nicki Stewart

Mon 16 – Thu 19 Jan, 10am – 4.30pm | 4 days

Delving into the wonderful world that is wax, Nicki will guide you through the core encaustic techniques using beeswax and dammar resin. Encaustic is an exciting and alchemical medium which predates oil painting and was used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians alike. Explore smooth and textural painting, layering, fusing, embedding, incising, embossing, image transfer, and drawing on wax. Inquire into and develop a strong sense of what is possible with this exciting medium.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES



Orientation/Welcome:

Sun 15 January, 6pm –7pm
All Summer School participants are encouraged to attend this event to meet their tutors and fellow classmates, plan for the workshop ahead and enjoy some drinks and nibbles.


Tutor Showcase:

Tue 17 January, 5pm – 6.30pm
Each tutor will give a brief fast-paced, informal presentation about an aspect of their working practice over drinks and nibbles. This is always an enjoyable, fun evening and not to be missed.


Artist Studio Visits:

Wed 18 January, 4.30pm – 6pm
Corban Estate Arts Centre is home to over 20 artists’ studios and this year we have planned a special tour to a selection of these studios. Come and meet some of our on-site artists, tour their studios and talk to them about their work.


Visitors Open Afternoon:

Thu 19 January, 2pm – 4.30pm
An opportunity for friends and family to visit the Summer School workshops at the Arts Centre to witness what is happening and being achieved.


Summer School Farewell:

Thu 19 January, 5pm – 6.30pm
A chance to say ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to those who are completing 4 day workshops and for participants to come together to celebrate the week. Enjoy live music, drinks and nibbles on the lawn.


Coffee Studio:

Mon – Sat, 9am – 4.30pm
The Coffee Studio will offer delicious organic coffee, fresh lunches, snacks and beverages throughout the week.
