Siobhan Crowley

ARTIST PROFILE
Siobhan Crowley’s art practice examines both the gendering of painterliness and the artistic contexts that contemporary painting is positioned within. Siobhan employs the visual language of feminist Central Core Imagery to engage with critical theory that debates the gendering of spatial concerns and painterly language.

Her works provoke and expose the subtleties of misogyny and gender inequality and how feminist artists are impeded in their right to occupy terrestrial and conceptual territory.

Stains, bleeds, cuts, and gestural marks signal the feminine in her paintings. This lexicon has been assembled within Siobhan’s recent suites of paintings to depict “impossible spaces,” imposing the bodyliness of the feminine into painting.

Siobhan Crowley holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design and Visual Arts. Since graduating Siobhan has held several solo shows around Auckland including a solo show at Studio One in 2014. Siobhan currently has a new body of work exhibited at NorthArt as part of the Group Show Chance and Change.
