Nate Savill

Nate Savill draws upon traditional blacksmithing techniques to create objects that are both functional and sculptural. Using coal and gas forges, he transports the centuries-old art of blacksmithing into the present, creating structures that seem to acknowledge a previous time, whilst simultaneously pointing to a radically different conceptual and stylistic direction. For Nate, “blacksmithing is a mental, physical and emotional challenge, a holistic experience requiring the union of mind and body”.

Nate graduated with a Bachelor of Design and Visual Art from Unitec in 2013. He has spent the last four summers running a coal forge at Barry Brickell’s Driving Creek Railway and Pottery in Coromandel, and has recentlycompleted a large chandelier commission for Barry. Nate has also worked for sculptors Andrew Drummond and Lou Purvis. He is currently based at Corban Estate Art Centre.
